EU Residue Requirements For 2008 Now Online

The 2008 European Union (EU) Residue Sampling Frequency Requirements for Red Meat were posted on the Food Safety & Inspection Service (FSIS) Export Library today.

Pork

U.S. packers are no longer required to test pork destined for the EU for the sedatives azaperone, propriomazine or carazolol.  The substances remaining on the list are ractopamine and nitrofurans.  The sample numbers for ractopamine and nitrofurans have increased for 2008 as a result of a 62 percent increase in U.S. pork exports to the EU in 2007.

Beef

The U.S. beef industry is no longer required to test U.S. beef destined for Europe for thyreostats or the banned substance, DES and its metabolites hexestrol and dienestrol.  Zilpaterol, trade name Zilmax®, was added to the residue sampling list for beef by the EU.  The substances currently on the list are MGA, zeranol and its metabolite taleranol, ractopamine, zilpaterol and nitrofurans.

USMEF is pleased with the changes the EU has made to the residue sampling list.  With the exception of Nitrofurans, which are prohibited for use in food-animals in the U.S., the products that remain on the residue sampling list are approved for use in U.S. livestock production but prohibited in the EU.  USMEF feels that the FSIS National Residue Monitoring Program is sufficient surveillance for products mutually banned for use in food-animals and will continue to work toward removing nitrofurans from the residue sampling list.
