USMEF Maintains Growing Interest During Anuga Show

USMEF participated this week (October 13-17) in one of the most important international food shows, Anuga. Held in Cologne, Germany, more than 6,000 companies from 95 countries vied for the attention of more than 163,000 visitors from 175 countries.

U.S. beef and pork producers were represented at the show to maintain the momentum of growing interest in Europe for their meat products. USMEF member companies who exhibited had the opportunity to meet with existing customers and be in contact with potential new buyers, according to John Brook, Regional Director, Europe, Russia & Middle East, and Anne Bardot, Director, Public Affairs & Communications of the USMEF Brussels regional office.

U.S. beef exports to the European Union (EU) for the first eight months of 2007 were up 120 percent, compared to the same period last year, to 4,554 metric tons (mt). If this positive trend continues, according to USMEF President and CEO Philip Seng, there is a very good chance that the high quality beef quota of 11,500 mt will be easily filled by the end of 2008. Leading markets for U.S. beef are Italy and Germany. Meanwhile, U.S. pork exports have increased 78 percent, compared to the same period last year, to 10,792 mt. Pork buyers from Russia were highly represented at Anuga, along with several companies from Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

The USMEF delegation, which along with Seng included Chairman Dennis Erpelding, Chairman-elect Dan Halstrom and Sr. Vice President, Policy Planning & Research Thad Lively, had the opportunity to share views with EU importers, who they learned are committed to developing further their business with U.S. meat products. EU importers of U.S. beef are expanding their foodservice business, while some are targeting the retail segment, provided they will have enough supply to guarantee a sustainable and successful partnership with European retail chains.

The USMEF Brussels office is working closely with U.S. producers and EU importers to take advantage of new business opportunities in the region. Brook and Bardot want to increase the visibility of U.S. meat products in the EU, educate customers about U.S. meat product attributes and secure growing market access for U.S. products. Interviews given by Seng during Anuga to major German media were part of this effort. Seng told reporters that USMEF welcomes the favorable business environment in Europe and sees new opportunities for U.S. producers.
