EU Further Liberalizes Its SRM Definition

The European Union (EU) has raised the upper age limit for removal of the vertebral column. The ruling should allow exports of U.S. bone-in short loins and other products from cattle of thirty months of age and under, which is a very positive step for U.S. beef exporters.

A regulation dated April 22 states “the age limit for removing vertebral column including dorsal root ganglia of bovine animals, as specified risk material can be increased from 24 to 30 months.”

The regulation was published today (April 23) in the “Official Journal of the European Union” and takes effect “on the third day following its publication.”

The EU specified risk material definition of the vertebral column is as follows:
The vertebral column excluding the vertebrae of the tail, the spinous and transverse processes of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae and the median sacral crest and wings of the sacrum, but including the dorsal root ganglia, of animals aged over 30 months.
