Egypt Removes Age Restriction on U.S. Beef

Egypt, which has developed into one of the largest and most reliable markets for U.S. beef exports, has removed the 30-month cattle age restriction on U.S. beef products. Egypt is now open to U.S. beef from cattle of all ages, with no export verification program required. However, exports still must originate from a plant approved for export to Egypt and comply with Egypt's requirements for halal certification.

Through November, last year's U.S. beef exports (including variety meat) to Egypt totaled 101,237 metric tons (223.2 million pounds) valued at $155.5 million. This made Egypt the fifth-largest destination for U.S. beef by volume and sixth-largest by value. For beef variety meat, Egypt was the second-largest market (to Mexico) in terms of both volume and value.

While variety meat makes up about 75 percent of the U.S. beef export volume to Egypt and 57 percent of its value, Egypt is also a rapidly growing market for U.S. beef muscle cuts. Muscle cut exports in 2010 more than doubled in volume (to 25,278 metric tons or 55.7 million pounds) and tripled in value (to $66.9 million) over the previous year.
