Kirk to Address USMEF Board of Directors Meeting May 22
USMEF is pleased to announce that Ambassador Ron Kirk, U.S. Trade Representative, will be a featured general session speaker at the USMEF Board of Directors Meeting on Friday, May 22, at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time.
Kirk was appointed earlier this year to serve as President Obama’s principal trade advisor, negotiator and spokesman on trade issues. He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 18. Prior to his Cabinet appointment, Kirk served as mayor of Dallas from 1995 to 2001 and as Texas Secretary of State in 1994. He has also practiced law as an assistant city attorney in Dallas and most recently in private practice in Washington, D.C.
“During his short time at USTR, Ambassador Kirk has already established himself as a skilled negotiator and respected advocate for U.S. trade interests,” said USMEF President and CEO Philip Seng. “USMEF is honored that he will be addressing our upcoming meeting, and we look forward to hearing more about his vision and perspective on global trade issues.”
Following Ambassador Kirk’s remarks, newly-appointed Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) Administrator Michael Michener will also address the USMEF delegation. A 10-year veteran of three foreign affairs agencies, Michener most recently served as the senior democracy and governance advisor and lead planning officer for the U.S. State Department’s Office of the Coordinator of Reconstruction and Stabilization.
The keynote speaker for the Wednesday, May 20, general session is Jim Miller, USDA under secretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services. Miller operated a farm in eastern Washington for two decades, and has extensive experience with the National Farmers Union, National Association of Wheat Growers, Canada-U.S. Joint Commission on Grains, and the U.S. Senate Budget Committee.
