Confirmation: U.S. Meat not Included on Mexico’s Retaliation List

Mexico Economy Minister Gerardo Ruiz Mateos has now released a list of products that are to be subject to increased tariffs enacted in retaliation for a move by the U.S. government to ban Mexican trucks from entering the United States. At this time, no U.S. meat products are included on the list.

On Tuesday, media reports from Mexico quoted unnamed sources in Mexico’s Agriculture Ministry and National Meat Council as saying that beef, pork and poultry products from the U.S. would not be affected by these tariff increases. These reports, which could not be confirmed until this morning, indicate that a broad range of U.S. products will be subject to increased tariffs of 10 to 45 percent, effective Thursday, March 19.

While it is a great relief to confirm the absence of U.S. meat products from the retaliation list, this issue still has the potential to significantly impact the overall flow of trade between the United States and Mexico. Therefore, USMEF will provide updates on this issue as further details emerge.
