Class Action Refunds in Puerto Rican Shipping Case

USMEF has been contacted by Class Action Refund, LLC, to alert our members to potential payments that may result from settlement of an antitrust case involving shipments of ocean-going freight to Puerto Rico between May 1, 2002, and April 17, 2008.  The shipping lines named in the case are Horizon Lines, Sea Star Lines, Crowley Liner Service and Trailer Bridge.

In October 2008, four former Horizon Lines and Sea Star Line executives pleaded guilty to antitrust violations in the U.S. mainland-Puerto Rico maritime trade, and one Sea Star executive pleased guilty to destroying evidence of price-fixing.

The case, which was heard in the U.S. District Court in Jacksonville, Fla., has resulted in a $20 million partial settlement from Horizon Lines and a $13.8 million partial settlement from Crowley.
