China Announces Resumption Of Beef Trade With United States
The Ministry of Agriculture of China and the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) announced today that China would resume U.S. beef imports, effective June 29.
According to China’s announcement, the market opening includes U.S. boneless beef under 30 months of age with removal of specific risk materials such as brain, spinal cord, eyes, salivary glands and intestine end (distal ileum).
“While we appreciate China’s efforts since April to resume market access for U.S. beef, we are disappointed with China’s announcement today of a limited market opening,” U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns responded in a USDA statement.
Johanns said he will not be satisfied until China opens to all U.S. beef products and USDA is ready to continue technical discussions with China in the coming weeks.
U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports to China in 2003 were 12,422 metric tons valued at $2.8 million. With Hong Kong, China was the seventh largest market for U.S. beef that year.
U.S. beef returned to Hong Kong in March after an absence of more than two years.
