U.S.And CanadaFurther Define Beef Import Rules
The U.S.has agreed to begin accepting Canadian beef imports from Canadian plants that process cattle both younger and older than 30 months of age, provided that meat from older animals and processing equipment are properly segregated in those plants. This rule change reopens the door for significant imports of boneless Canadian beef from animals under 30 months of age from plants that also process older animals. Canadian plants must process only young cattle at the start of shifts and then segregate all processing equipment so as not to mix products from older and younger animals. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is waiting for written confirmation of the protocols from USDA and expects to be able to issue export certificates this week.
The U.S.and dozens of other countries closed their borders to all Canadian beef after May 20 when a single case of BSE was discovered in Canada. In early August, the U.S.announced it would begin accepting shipments of boxed boneless beef from Canadian animals under 30 months old, since experts believe BSE does not strike young animals. Mexicohas similarly agreed to accept imports of Canadian beef from animals under 30 months of age.
