New Canadian Feed Ban Enhancements Go Into Effect July 12
Canada is enhancing measures to more quickly eliminate bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) from Canadian cattle and to protect producers from the potential consequences of receiving contaminated feed.
Starting July 12, certain cattle tissues, known as specified risk material (SRM), believed capable of transmitting BSE are being banned from all animal feed, pet food and fertilizer. Under this enhanced feed ban, there are new regulations for anyone handling, transporting or disposing of SRM.
This allows the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to track and maintain continuous control over SRM, ensuring that it does not enter livestock feed, pet food or fertilizer.
For more information, see the BSE Safeguards page on the CFIA Web site.
