Canada  Confirms Seventh BSE Case In Alberta Dairy Cow

A 50-month old Alberta dairy cow  was confirmed to have bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said today (July 13). CFIA had announced an inconclusive BSE test result July 10.

CFIA reports the animal did not enter the human or animal food systems and the case, as well as the age of the animal, is consistent with BSE cases reported in other countries.

CFIA has located the birth farm of the affected Alberta cow and investigators are tracing other cattle born on the farm within 12 months before or after the affected animal.

CFIA will conduct a full investigation of how this animal was exposed to BSE and has extended an invitation to United States health officials to participate in this effort.

This is the seventh case of BSE confirmed in Canada and the second in the last 10 days. CFIA announced July 4 a cross-bred beef cow from Manitoba that was at least 15 years of age was confirmed to have BSE.
