BSE Confirmed In Alberta Beef Cow
Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was confirmed in an Alberta beef cow today by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). This is the eighth BSE case in Canada and the third reported in the last two months.
The animal did not enter the human food or animal feed systems. The animal’s age is estimated between eight and 10 years. Based on this range, exposure likely occurred before the Canadian feed ban’s introduction or during its early implementation.
A CFIA investigation is underway to locate the animal’s birth farm to verify the animal’s age and identify herdmates of interest and potential sources of contaminated feed.
For more information, see the CFIA news release.
