Avian Influenza Detected At Saskatchewan Broiler Farm
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) today (Sept. 27) confirmed test results from samples collected at a commercial breeder broiler farm in Saskatchewan are positive for a North America strain of H7N3 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus. This is not the same as the H5N1 virus that has spread through birds in Asia, Europe and Africa.
USDA, in accordance with an agreement with Canada, is banning imports of all live birds, including chicken and turkeys, along with unprocessed avian products from Saskatchewan.
CFIA is beginning depopulation of the infected flock and conducting thorough surveillance in the surrounding area. Canadian officials have assured USDA continued updates of information on the epidemiological investigation and surveillance reports.
USDA also is conducting surveillance for all strains of avian influenza in cooperation with individual states, industry and the U.S. Department of the Interior.
