Japan Finds 10th BSE Case; New Surveillance System Promised By USDA
Japanese authorities are trying to trace the history of a 10th case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) since the first Japanese case was discovered in September 2001. The latest case is an eight-year-old Holstein cow from Kanagawa Prefecture, near Tokyo.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced today (Feb. 23) that it will soon unveil a new surveillance system to monitor the U.S. for BSE. USDA Chief Veterinarian Ron DeHaven said in a telephone conference that details of the new system will be released "in the near future."
