Canada Announces New BSE Control Measures

The Canadian Minister of Health Anne McLellan and Minister for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Lyle Vanclief announced new BSE control measures that include the removal of all specific risk materials (SRM) from food products in a press conference on Friday, July 18, but did not provide a further definition of SRM  than “such as brain and spinal tissue.” The Canadian officials announced the removal of SRMs as a precautionary measure to further reduce any potential risk exposure to consumers of Canadian beef.

In a related news release, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman praised Canadian officials for implementing these additional safeguards to strengthen their system of BSE protection. She also commended the Canadian government for its thorough investigation and its willingness to have an international team of BSE experts review the process, and stated that the U.S. “looks forward to continued coordination among the United States, Canada and our other trading partners to address the various and complex issues regarding the single BSE case.”
