Britain Exports First Post-FMD Outbreak Beef Shipment
Britain exported its first shipment of beef on September 25 since its disastrous outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) last year. The shipment went to Britain’s EU partner the Netherlands.
The beef was shipped from southern Wales under a plan that allows exports of beef and beef products from British cattle born after Aug. 1, 1996 — the date is due to Britain’s earlier problems with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
There have been no British FMD cases for over a year, after an outbreak that witnessed more than 2,000 cases across Britain and the liquidation of more than 4 million animals to stop its spread.
