Brazilian And Chilean Beef Downgraded

The European Food Safety Authority has proposed that Brazilian beef be dropped from Category 1 to Category 2, a move that would allow Brazil only to export boneless beef to the European Union (EU). Although the change would seem detrimental to its image in the EU, USMEF Director, Europe, Russia & the Middle East Jackie Hruby commented that since Brazilian beef’s main selling point is its low price, it’s likely to have most impact on imports of casings. Hruby also said that the move may impact Brazilian beef imports to Russia and the Middle East.

The European Food Safety Authority also proposed relegating Chilean beef from Category 1 to Category 2.

The proposals must be sent to the EU’s Standing Veterinary Committee and then to the World Trade Organization (WTO). If enacted, they are likely to come into force in early 2006.
