U.S. Red Meat Export Markets, Up Close And Personal
Members attending the USMEF Board of Directors meeting Thursday in La Jolla, Calif., learned about export markets for U.S. red meat straight from USMEF staff living in those areas. They understand the culture, politics and other factors affecting imports.
The day started with market breakout sessions covering each region so exporters could attend the sessions they were most interested in. The sessions operate on a smaller scale, allowing participants to ask direct questions and discuss issues to gain greater understanding of market dynamics.
Additionally, several committee meetings were held to discuss current issues and trends facing each sector. Committees that met include the Joint USMEF Exporter and AMI International Trade Committee, Feedgrain and Oilseed Caucus, USMEF Beef and Allied Industries Committee and the Joint USMEF Pork and Allied Industries and NPB Trade Committee.
Trade policies, USMEF activity plans for the upcoming year and other issues like animal welfare and market studies were discussed by USMEF members bringing different concerns and ideas to the table.
USMEF members also had the opportunity to meet and talk with new USMEF Regional Director, Europe, Russia and the Middle East John Brook and USMEF Director, Public Affairs and Communications Anne Bardot to gain insight into U.S. red meat opportunities in the European Union.
Brook says the EU stopped subsidizing agriculture and now is a net importer of U.S. beef. There is great opportunity in the market for U.S. exporters especially since the United States can supply a consistent, high quality product. The EU is also much more interested in doing business with the United States rather than some of the South American countries that supply inconsistent product produced under inefficient and non-standard systems.
Meanwhile, USMEF Japan Director Greg Hanes updated members on activities to make U.S. pork a daily menu item in Japan. The USMEF strategy includes U.S. pork consumer cooking classes with popular TV chefs and a cookbook developed by one of those chefs that includes a U.S. pork recipe for each day in any given month. Hanes also introduced upcoming summer promotions including a U.S. pork day at a ballpark in Japan with former Houston Astros pitcher Nolan Ryan as the guest of honor.
The Board of Directors meeting ends Friday with a business session where USMEF officers will update members on new developments since the last November's meeting in Cancun.
