Beef Export Numbers Continue to Improve

The most recent weekly net sales figures for U.S. beef released by the USDA — 21,900 metric tons (48.3 million pounds) for the week of July 11-17 — are 16.6 percent greater than the same week in 2003 and 54 percent larger than the same week last year. Beef net sales are generally an indicator of future exports.

Export sales destined for Mexico are approximately double both actual exports for the week and average weekly volumes for the year, although it should be noted that reported sales volumes for Mexico vary significantly from week to week.

Thanks to the opening of the market, export sales to South Korea totaled 6,100 metric tons (13.4 million pounds).

Exports to Russia for the week totaled 1,100 metric tons (2.4 million pounds) bringing the year-to-date volume to 6,879 metric tons (15.2 million pounds).

Total weekly exports to all destinations — 11,639 metric tons (25.7 million pounds) were 19 percent larger than the same week last year.

Other year-to-date U.S. beef export bright spots include:

  • Japan up 79 percent to 29,241 metric tons (64.5 million pounds), an increase of 12,878 metric tons (28.4 million pounds)
  • EU up 228 percent to 1,119 metric tons (2.5 million pounds)
  • Taiwan up 47 percent to 13,289 metric tons (29.3 million pounds), an increase of 4,353 metric tons (9.6 million pounds)
  • Vietnam up 506 percent to 20,628 metric tons (45.5 million pounds) (an increase of 17,223 metric tons (38 million pounds)
  • Mexico up 3 percent to 129,471 metric tons (28.5 million pounds) (an increase of 4,353 metric tons (9.6 million pounds)
  • Total year-to-date exports at 258,656 metric tons (570.2 million pounds) are 58,051 metric tons (128 million pounds) or 29 percent larger than last year but still only 61 percent of the than 2003 volume, which totaled 425,139 metric tons (937.3 million pounds)

  • Vietnam (800 metric tons (1.8 million pounds)

Beef net sales are generally an indicator of future exports.

Exports to Russia for the week totaled 1,100 metric tons (2.4 million pounds) bringing the year-to-date volume to 6,879 metric tons (15.2 million pounds).

Total weekly exports to all destinations — 11,639 metric tons (25.7 million pounds) were 19 percent larger than the same week last year.

Other year-to-date U.S. beef export bright spots include:

  • Japan up 79 percent to 29,241 metric tons (64.5 million pounds), an increase of 12,878 metric tons (28.4 million pounds)
  • EU up 228 percent to 1,119 metric tons (2.5 million pounds)
  • Taiwan up 47 percent to 13,289 metric tons (29.3 million pounds), an increase of 4,353 metric tons (9.6 million pounds)
  • Vietnam up 506 percent to 20,628 metric tons (45.5 million pounds) (an increase of 17,223 metric tons (38 million pounds)
  • Mexico up 3 percent to 129,471 metric tons (28.5 million pounds) (an increase of 4,353 metric tons (9.6 million pounds)
  • Total year-to-date exports at 258,656 metric tons (570.2 million pounds) are 58,051 metric tons (128 million pounds) or 29 percent larger than last year but still only 61 percent of the than 2003 volume, which totaled 425,139 metric tons (937.3 million pounds)
