U.S. Pork Finds Opportunities At Fine Food Show

One of the fastest growing markets for U.S. pork exports is Australia and USMEF built on that trend this week in Sydney at Fine Food Australia, the largest industry event in the country.

U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports to Australia through the first seven months of this year have increased 39 percent in volume and 64 percent in value compared to the same time last year. Exports climbed to just over 20,000 metric tons (44 million pounds) valued at $54.4 million.

Australian Pork Limited reports domestic pig farmers are on the brink of ruin due to a prolonged impact of drought, a strong Australian dollar that affects exports and record levels of pork imports displacing Australian grown pork, especially in the manufacturing sector.

A large proportion of Australia’s major food processors and importers also exhibited at the show, USMEF ASEAN director Eric Choon reports. Those companies took the ideal opportunity to discuss with USMEF staff the potential and future imports of U.S. pork for production of sausages and bacon.

At the USMEF booth in the U.S. pavilion, staff also provided information sheets and brochures to some 30,000 trade-only buyers and decision makers at this year’s event, including representatives of the food importing, distribution, retail, and catering industries.

With Australian pork import volumes at historical highs, more than doubling in the last four years, USMEF builds U.S. pork brand awareness at shows like Fine Food to capitalize on opportunities in the market. Participation at this show helped USMEF generate new sales leads, educate buyers about U.S. positive attributes and conduct face-to-face interviews with buyers to assess the market and understand buyer needs.
