China bank reform seen in early 2004
Nation says it will spearhead project with one or two banks, cutting debt and injecting capital

BEIJING (Reuters) - China is scrutinizing proposals to rescue its debt-laden state banks and could move by early next year to shore up the sector, officials and analysts said Friday.

Traceability in pig meat was the subject of top level discussions in Berlin recently between German and Dutch meat industry experts.
The discussions, organized by the Dutch Meat Board, were part of the fourth 'Berliner Runde'.
One year before EU Regulation 178/2002 (the “General Food Law”) comes into effect, this subject is a very topical one and prompted a very lively debate among the various participants.
Pig Industry Takes the Lead
New health and welfare strategy unveiled for British pig meat industry.
Almost 100 leading figures from the British pig industry attended a conference held to launch a national Pig Health and Welfare Strategy.
The strategy was unveiled at Belvoir Castle in Lincolnshire and has been produced by the British Pig Executive (BPEX) the Pig Veterinary Society (PVS), the National Pig Association (NPA) and the Meat and Livestock Commission (MLC).
BPEX Chief Executive Mick Sloyan said: "The strategy will now undergo comprehensive consultation to tailor it exactly to the needs of the industry. A key proposal is the creation of a Pig Health and Welfare Council to drive this forward and that should be in place in early 2004."

During a press briefing in the oval office with King Abdullah of Jordan, President George Bush said he is making a decision on steel tariffs. Shortly after, Bush announced his decision to terminate the temporary safeguard measures on steel that he put in place in March 2002.
Tyson Foods To Close Two Meat Production Facilities
U.S. meat processor Tyson Foods has announced that it is to close facilities in Manchester, New Hampshire, and Augusta, Maine in early February 2004, in order to further improve long-term manufacturing efficiencies.
