Industry groups support voluntary COOL legislation
Two key leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives, House Agriculture Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and Ranking Minority Member Charles Stenholm, D-Texas, introduced a bill this week to make country-of-origin labeling voluntary. The proposed "Food Promotion Act of 2004," will direct the Secretary of Agriculture to establish the voluntary labeling of produce, meat and seafood with country-of-origin information. The proposal drew immediate support from several industry organizations. American Meat Institute President J. Patrick Boyle stressed the AMI’s support, calling the approach sensible and cost effective. In a joint news release, the NCBA joined the National Pork Producers Council, National Fisheries Institute, United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association and Produce Marketing Association in voicing support. “The initiative,” says NCBA President Jan Lyons, “represents a market-based solution which promotes American beef, without the costs and liabilities of a government-mandated program."
