U.S. too optimistic, beef to Japan
USDA and some industry groups appear over-optimistic about when U.S. beef exports to Japan will restart. USDA Under Secretary J.B. Penn, who led the U.S. delegation in two days of talks, expects exports will resume “in a matter of weeks”. And NCBA chief economist Gregg Doud says exports will restart by year-end. Others though dismiss that short a timeframe as unrealistic. Reports from Japan last week suggest it may take months for Japan to complete its rulemaking process, not the six weeks that NCBA CEO Terry Stokes cited last week.
