“Today's announcement that Japan intends to increase its import tax on U.S. beef on Aug. 1 is both unnecessary and unwarranted. I stressed to Japanese Minister Yoshiyuki Kamei during our meeting earlier this month that this action was not needed since Japan's beef imports have not increased over historical levels. Pursuant to Article 12 of the Tariff Act, we will be formally requesting that the Japanese government waive the safeguard so as to bring the tariff back to its pre-safeguard level of 38.5 percent.

The talks last week between a USDA team and officials from each country last week were termed "constructive" by USDA, but USDA spokeswoman Alisa Harrison said that there was still a "need for more dialogue, which will take place this week." Both South Korea and Japan are seeking a certification from USDA that from Sept. 1 forward there is no Canadian beef in any shipments destined for those countries.
FDA contemplates HACCP designed for feed producers
The Food and Drug Administration is mulling a requirement forcing U.S. animal feed manufacturers to implement extra measures designed to prevent bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad cow disease.
