Offer near on U.S. beef impasse The Asahi Shimbun
Japan says cattle under 20 months don't need BSE tests. Seeking a compromise that could ease the U.S. beef ban, Japan plans to offer to exclude cattle aged 20 months or younger from screening tests in the United States for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), officials said.

The animal was destroyed and the area at the slaughterhouse was sterilized. This is the first case of BSE to be reported since March of this year, and the 12th since the disease was discovered in Japan in 2001.
