Labor Party win could shift Australia's meat export strategies
If Labor can win this fall's election, Australia will move rapidly away from export of live cattle and sheep, and into the export of processed meat products. Agriculture spokesman Gavan O'Connor told Weekly Times that Labor's strategy will to be to move to value-added products which would not only be more profitable for the country, but would also add jobs that are now being effectively outsourced.

Jay D. Nielsen, chief financial officer of Kansas City-based National Beef Packing Co., spoke to a Deutsche Bank High Yield Conference on Thursday, revealing that while the company has suffered somewhat as a result of the economy, the BSE scare and the general situation of the beef industry, the rest of the industry has had it worse in 2004.
