Japanese meat packers extend full traceability to pork, poultry
Japanese poultry and pork processors will begin maintaining and offering the same product traceability to their retail customers and consumers that they currently offer for beef.

WASHINGTON, March 17 (Reuters) - The United States, Canada and Mexico plan to develop continent-wide safeguards against mad cow disease that would allow the resumption of more beef trade between the countries, a U.S. Agriculture Department official said on Wednesday.

Canadian organic beef producers say existing processing plants don’t meet their needs.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The top veterinary officer of the U.S. Agriculture Department told an industry audience here Wednesday that the agency was "close to making an announcement" on licensing of rapid testing technology for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) to support USDA's ramped-up surveillance program unveiled March 15.

U.S. trade official hints at legal action against Japan
Allen Johnson, the top U.S. agriculture trade negotiator, said he doesn't rule out possible World Trade Organization action against Japan if it shows no flexibility in working toward a resolution on the country's import ban on U.S. beef.

Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman held a tele-news conference and webcast on National Agriculture Week and USDA's eGovernment Initiative. USDA's Chief Information Officer Scott Charbo joined Veneman as did USDA Chief Economist Keith Collins.
