Japan to raise tariffs, possibly ban, U.S. beef exports
Japan is preparing to raise tariffs on all U.S. beef imports and has threatened a ban if America re-opens its borders to Canada, Japan's Agriculture Minister told his American counterpart.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman said she's convinced Canadian beef is safe but would give no time frame Thursday for reopening the border.

No End in Sight for Checkoff Controversy
It was a landmark decision, but not the final word. Last week, the Eighth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals upheld a ruling declaring a nationwide beef checkoff program unconstitutional. However, supporters of the checkoff have recommended to the U.S. Department of Justice that it try to have the ruling overturned, even if it means heading to the U.S. Supreme Court.
