Japan meat processors step up production after Nippon scandal
A voluntary halt in beef production by by NIPPON MEAT PACKERS INC. (TSE:2282) following a beef-mislabeling scandal will lead to higher production by meat-processing companies in September. ITOHAM FOODS INC. (TSE:2284) expects its production volume next month to be 20 per cent above the year-earlier amount.

 

Japanese Beef Consumption Rebounds

Although USDA statistics through the end of June show U.S. beef exports as a whole fell 3 percent compared to last year thanks in part to fewer sales to Japan, information from the U.S. Meat Export Federation's Tokyo office says Japanese consumption of beef has nearly recovered from the drop it suffered when mad cow disease was first discovered in that country last year.

TOKYO, Aug. 28 Kyodo - The Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry stepped up its inspections Wednesday of all uninspected beef submitted by a subsidiary of Nippon Meat Packers Inc. under a state buyback scheme introduced after mad cow disease was found in Japan last September.
