Canada Announces Additional Steps to Protect Beef Industry
Canada's Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lyle Vanclief today announced two new measures to further assist the Canadian livestock sector in addressing the impacts of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE). The first measure is a $36 million extension to the Government of Canada's commitment to the national BSE Recovery Program. The second initiative provides advance payments to producers as a transition measure until new business risk management programming is implemented nationally.

 

Mexico Eases Ban on Canadian Beef
The Mexican government is opening its doors to Canadian beef products, but only to those products that present no risk to human or animal health. Mexico banned beef products from Canada when a single-cow cast of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was confirmed in May.

EU/USA: EU, US reach agreement on joint plan for farm trade reform
The European Union and the US have agreed a joint proposal for farm trade reform that could help troubled trade negotiations move forward. The joint plan, which will be put to the full World Trade Organization (WTO) membership later today [Wednesday], comes as WTO members try to make progress in the troubled Doha Round of free trade talks before next month's key meeting in Cancun, Mexico.

Colorado producer goes high-tech to track cattle
Denver-based Maverick Ranch Beef has become the first U.S. cattle operation to track its animals using a hand-held computer that takes retinal images of cattle in an effort to capture and track genetic information on the 25,000 cattle that go through the operation's Colorado facilities each year.

U.S. Department of Agriculture Under Secretary for Food Safety Dr. Elsa Murano announced Monday the establishment of a New Technology Office to be based within the Food Safety and Inspection Service.
