China unveils bailout package for farmers' banks

China unveiled plans on Thursday to bail out thousands of debt-laden rural credit cooperatives to help hard-pressed farmers and shore up the lagging rural economy.

Canadian cattle herd at record high
The number of cattle and calves on Canadian farms rose to a record 15.7 million in June due to BSE-related import bans by the United States and other countries. The record size of the national herd, representing a 1.9 percent year-on-year increase in the first full month of bans by 34 countries, showed the C$7.5 billion ($5.4 billion) industry was at a virtual halt. Beef prices fell 5 percent in July, the largest monthly drop since the mid-1970s, with most of the downward pressure on the price of cuts normally produced for export. The United States and Mexico relaxed their ban on Canadian beef imports on Aug. 8, saying they would allow boneless beef from cattle less than 30 months old. Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago advised Canada they would soon lift their beef bans.
