BEEF IMPORT COMPROMISE?
One of the inroads the joint U.S.-Japanese-U.S. bovine spongiform encephalopathy task force made at its three meetings was creating dialogue over Japan’s insistence that all cattle be tested for BSE. The U.S. and most scientific bodies argue that only older and high-risk cattle – non-ambulatory -- need to be tested for the brain wasting disease. In fact, the international animal health organization claims that tests may not detect the disease in young animals because of the disease’s long incubation period.

Australian chilled beef remained popular with Korean buyers in June, with the volume of chilled imports increasing by 22 percent compared to May and 130 percent compared to the same month last year to 1,128 metric tons, according to Meat and Livestock Australia. In the calendar year to June, chilled imports from Australia increased by 46% to 4,393 tons. The value of chilled products imported from Australia has also seen a major increase, up by 182 percent compared to the same month last year to US$7.06 million and up by 89 percent in the six months to June to US$28.3 million.
