Australia live cattle exports riding high

SYDNEY, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Australia's live cattle exports climbed to a five-year high in September as the country shipped 106,563 head offshore, industry groups said on Thursday.

BRUSSELS, Nov 7 (Reuters) - European Commission veterinary experts have voted to ban imports of certain types of beef from a region of Brazil after an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in neighboring Paraguay, the Commission said on Thursday.

Cochran to Chair Sen. Ag Com
The Republican takeover of the U.S. Senate means Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, will lose his chairmanship even though he was re-elected, but the bigger news is that Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., will become the new chairman rather than Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Indiana, the current ranking members and former chairman of the committee.


Veneman Makes Personnel Announcements At USDA

WASHINGTON, Nov. 7 --- Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman today announced several personnel announcements at USDA in an effort to enhance trade, animal and plant regulations, homeland security and strategic initiatives within the department.  The announcements include naming Mike Neruda as Senior Advisor to the Secretary for Homeland Security and Strategic Initiatives, Dr. James G. Butler as Deputy Undersecretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services and Dr. Charles Lambert as Deputy Undersecretary for Marketing and Regulatory Services.
