WASHINGTON, April 8 (Reuters) - Vice President Richard Cheney should urge Japan to reopen its markets to U.S. beef, banned three months ago because of the first U.S. case of mad cow disease, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee said on Thursday.

A split has occurred between supermarket and restaurant chain operators over Japan's import ban on U.S. beef, as a group of midsize retailers asked their government not to compromise in demanding the United States test all cattle for bovine spongiform encephalopathy.
