60% in Japan don't want U.S. beef
More than 60% of Japanese say they don't want to eat U.S. beef because of mad cow fears, even as Tokyo considers lifting a ban on U.S. imports, a Japanese newspaper survey said Wednesday.
Veneman on Asian beef trade
Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman said Monday the U.S. team that negotiated the beef agreement announced with Japan Saturday is also meeting with governments of Taiwan, South Korea and Hong Kong to try to reopen beef trade.
South Korea turns down U.S. beef, welcomes Mexican beef
U.S. negotiators evidently struck out in South Korea after convincing Japan and Taiwan to take steps to end the banning of American beef. The South Korean Agriculture Ministry told Asia Pulse on Wednesday that despite a request from the U.S. trade delegation in a meeting with Huh Sang-man, Agriculture and Forestry Minister, the country will not lift its ban on beef, poultry and oranges from the United States.

Statistics Canada reported Oct. 25 that Canadian cattle producers saw better cattle and calf prices during August, but market prices still lag behind levels recorded before last year's discovery of one case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Alberta.
Major jump in meat profits drives Maple Leaf's third quarter
Maple Leaf Foods, Toronto, reported that its third-quarter operating income more than doubled in the third quarter, spurred by a major turnaround in its meat division, and that sales jumped 31 percent, to $1.7 billion, as compared to $1.3 billion for the same period last year. Year-to-date sales rose to $4.6 billion, from $3.8 billion during the same period last year, mainly due to the acquisition of Schneider Foods.
Argentine beef exports continue to increase
Exports of Argentine beef more than tripled during the first eight months of the year, to $635 million from $181 million for the same period last year. Swift Armour SA Argentina, the nation's largest beef exporter, projects its sales will jump 30 percent, to $193 million, for 2004. Swift Armour said it plans to spend $20 million over the next three years to increase capacity to meet international demand for Argentine beef.
Mexican Beef Imports Resume
An import ban on Mexican beef has been lifted as the South Korea government has confirmed beef products from the Latin American country do not contain beef from the United States.

However, pork production totaled 1.77 billion pounds, up six percent from the previous year. Pig kill totaled 9.00 million head -- five percent above September 2003. The average pig liveweight at slaughter was two pounds above the previous year, at 265 pounds.
