U.S. Beef Exports To ASEAN Increase Dramatically
U.S. beef exports to ASEAN continue their dramatic increase in 2003 as more regional chefs add U.S. beef to their menus following culinary training with USMEF-Singapore. U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports to the ASEAN region for January-May 2003 (8,161 mt) rose 298 percent in volume compared to the same five months of 2002, and 49 percent in value ($10.8 million). USMEF-Singapore reports a greater variety of U.S. beef cuts offered by chefs graduating from its U.S. Meat Culinary Training Program.
USMEF ASEAN Manager Eric Choon reports significant enthusiasm for a variety of U.S. beef dishes in the Philippines: the owner and chef of El Cirikulo Restaurant in Manila began featuring short plate and hanging tenders on the menu after learning new cooking methods at USMEF training in May. Similarly, PTC Commercial Corporation in Manila now imports U.S. beef back ribs in addition to U.S. top blade, short plate, short ribs, hanging tenders, rib fingers, heel muscle and loin cuts. The Pan Food Company in Bangkok now includes U.S. hanging tenders in a wide range of U.S. beef selections after USMEF chef training in Singapore and in-country seminars in Thailand. Metro Hypermarket in Vietnam has also expanded its U.S. beef imports to include short ribs, loins and round cuts.
USMEF-Singapore conducted in-country chef training at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Surabaya, Indonesia on August 4 and 5. U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports to Indonesia for the first five months of 2003 increased 488 percent by volume (6,371 mt) and 131 percent by value ($4.74 million) over the same period in 2002.
