Return Of U.S. Beef Celebrated In Malaysia

USMEF held a press luncheon and evening reception last Sunday (July 3) to celebrate the return of U.S. beef to Malaysia. Festivities started with U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia Christopher LaFleur hosting a U.S. beef luncheon for 20 members of leading print and television media.

USMEF ASEAN Director Eric Choon talked about the U.S. industry’s unwavering commitment to safety and quality and also supplied information regarding the superiority of grain-fed U.S. beef, the USDA grading system and the variety of cuts available in the Malaysian market.

After a luncheon featuring U.S. rib eye steak and filet mignon, Jonathan Gressel, agriculture counselor of FAS in Kuala Lumpur and Choon were interviewed by most of the leading daily newspapers and television stations.

That evening, a reception was held at the J.W. Marriot in Kuala Lumpur for more than 700 industry members to celebrate the return of U.S. beef. U.S. boneless prime rib roast, Texas-style chili and American hamburgers were enjoyed.

Malaysia’s imports of U.S. beef prior to the suspension were growing as the country positions itself to be a leader in the Islamic world. The first air shipments of U.S. beef since the reopening announcement in March reached Malaysia a week ago.

Malaysia accepts U.S. boneless beef from animals less than 30 months of age produced under an approved AMS Beef Export Verification program for beef to Malaysia is eligible for export. Slaughter and processing establishments are subject to Malaysian inspection and approval for halal export.
