USDA: Oct.-May U.S. Ag Trade Surplus is $9.3 Billion
In May 2004, both U.S. agricultural imports and exports declined marginally compared with April; however, imports continued falling more rapidly than exports, raising the export surplus slightly. The cumulative export surplus for the fiscal year to date, October 2003 through May 2004, equals $9.3 billion, up 26.5 percent from last year, according to USDA's Agricultural Trade Update released today.

USDA officials acknowledge flaws in BSE surveillance
Despite testifying at a joint hearing Wednesday by the House Committees on Agriculture and Government Reform, USDA Inspector General Phyllis K. Fong let the written word do most of the talking with regard to alleged flaws her office has uncovered in the Agriculture Department's BSE surveillance program.
