Market Overview
Beef
Exports of U.S. beef and beef variety meat to the European Union (EU) in 2006 were 14,713 metric tons (mt) worth $28.9 million. High per capita beef consumption and declining domestic production have resulted in a growing beef deficit in Europe of 350,000 mt in 2006, and European Commission forecasts continuously revise these deficit figures upward. In October 2006, the net deficit (imports less exports) was forecast for the year 2012 at 750,000 mt. In April 2007, the figures circulating within the Commission were much higher, with some estimates suggesting a net deficit by 2012 of as much as 1.3 million mt.

Pork
In 2006, U.S. exports of pork and pork variety meat to the European Union increased by 45 percent while exports to Eastern Europe showed a 48 percent decline due mainly to the accession of 10 Eastern European countries to the EU. In total, pork exports to the region were still worth more than $60 million. Although EU pork production is forecast to remain flat or even decline slightly over the longer term, the EU is expected to be a net pork exporter for the foreseeable future.
